Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Provence Rose (Rosa × centifolia) has a longstanding place in traditional medicine, particularly in Persian, Unani, and some European herbal practices. Its petals and extracts have been used for a variety of ailments, including as a mild remedy for digestive complaints like nausea and vomiting. Traditional texts and ethnobotanical surveys report its use, often as rose water or tea, for soothing the stomach and as a gentle aromatic to reduce discomfort. However, the body of evidence is largely anecdotal or based on historical usage rather than on rigorous scientific investigation.

Modern scientific studies directly evaluating Provence Rose for nausea and vomiting are scarce or nonexistent. There are some studies on closely related rose species (such as Rosa damascena) indicating mild anxiolytic and antiemetic effects, but these are limited and not directly transferable to Provence Rose. The limited evidence from laboratory or clinical studies does not allow for a strong scientific endorsement of its efficacy for these symptoms. As such, the use of Provence Rose for nausea and vomiting remains primarily justified by traditional use, with scientific evidence lacking and the strength of evidence rated low.
