Evidence supporting the use of: Star Anise
For the health condition: Nausea and Vomiting
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Star anise (Illicium verum) has a long history of use in traditional Chinese and other Asian medicine systems for a variety of digestive complaints, including nausea and vomiting. The aromatic spice is commonly included in herbal formulas intended to settle the stomach, stimulate digestion, and alleviate discomfort from gastrointestinal upset. Traditional texts sometimes associate star anise with the treatment of "cold" digestive conditions and recommend its use for symptoms like bloating, gas, and nausea. However, despite its widespread traditional use, there is little to no modern scientific research specifically validating star anise’s effectiveness for nausea and vomiting. Most studies on star anise have focused on its antimicrobial, antioxidant, or anti-inflammatory properties, rather than its effects on gastrointestinal symptoms. Some laboratory studies have identified compounds such as anethole in star anise, which may have mild carminative (gas-relieving) and antispasmodic effects, but these findings have not been directly linked to relief from nausea or vomiting in clinical trials. Thus, while the use of star anise for nausea and vomiting is clearly supported by traditional practice, scientific evidence for its efficacy remains largely absent.
