Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 4

Vitamin B6 (Pyridoxine HCl) is scientifically validated as a treatment to support nausea and vomiting, particularly in pregnancy (commonly referred to as “morning sickness”). Multiple clinical guidelines, including those from the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), recommend vitamin B6 as a first-line therapy for mild to moderate nausea and vomiting in pregnant women. Randomized controlled trials and meta-analyses have demonstrated that vitamin B6, either alone or in combination with doxylamine, is more effective than placebo in reducing symptoms of nausea and vomiting during pregnancy.

The mechanism is not fully understood, but pyridoxine is believed to play a role in neurotransmitter synthesis and function, which may influence the vomiting center in the brain. The standard dose used in studies ranges from 10 to 25 mg, taken 3 to 4 times daily. Importantly, vitamin B6 is generally well tolerated, and no major teratogenic risk has been observed at these doses.

While most research has been conducted in pregnant populations, the evidence for other causes of nausea and vomiting is limited. Thus, its use is primarily evidence-based for pregnancy-related nausea and vomiting. Overall, the scientific support for vitamin B6’s use in this context is strong, justifying its inclusion as a recommended therapy for morning sickness.
