Evidence supporting the use of: Astragalin
For the health condition: Nephritis
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Astragalin, a flavonoid compound found in plants such as Astragalus membranaceus and Persicaria capitata, has shown some promise in preclinical studies for the management of nephritis, particularly in models of glomerulonephritis and lupus nephritis. Several animal studies have demonstrated that astragalin can attenuate kidney inflammation, reduce proteinuria, and mitigate histopathological damage. These effects are thought to be mediated through the inhibition of pro-inflammatory cytokines (such as TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6) and attenuation of oxidative stress via upregulation of antioxidant enzymes.
For example, a 2019 study in a mouse model of lupus nephritis found that astragalin administration resulted in reduced renal inflammation and improved renal function, likely through suppression of the NF-κB pathway. Other studies have highlighted its anti-inflammatory and anti-apoptotic effects in renal tissue. However, these findings are limited to animal models and in vitro studies; there are no published clinical trials in humans evaluating the efficacy or safety of astragalin for nephritis. Thus, while there is a scientific rationale and some experimental support, the evidence base is still at an early stage and does not yet support clinical recommendation.
