Evidence supporting the use of: Atractylone
For the health condition: Nephritis
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Atractylone is a major bioactive compound found in Atractylodes species, particularly Atractylodes macrocephala, a traditional Chinese medicinal herb. The use of Atractylodes in herbal formulas for supporting kidney health, including nephritis (inflammation of the kidneys), is documented in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). In TCM, Atractylodes is believed to "tonify the spleen" and "drain dampness," concepts that are sometimes associated with symptoms of nephritis, such as edema and proteinuria. Classical TCM formulas containing Atractylodes have been used to address patterns thought to correlate with nephritic syndromes, although these are based on TCM diagnostics rather than biomedical definitions.
Scientific research directly investigating atractylone, the isolated compound, for nephritis is limited. Some preclinical studies suggest anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory properties of atractylone, but robust animal or human studies specifically on nephritis are lacking. Most available evidence supporting the use of atractylone or Atractylodes for nephritis thus comes from traditional use, not from modern clinical trials or mechanistic studies. The traditional evidence can be considered moderate (hence a rating of 2), as the herb is a common component of TCM formulas for kidney-related disorders, but there is insufficient direct scientific validation for this specific indication.
