Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Auricularia, commonly known as wood ear or black fungus, has a longstanding place in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and East Asian herbal practice. In TCM, Auricularia is believed to "nourish the kidneys" and "benefit the blood," and is sometimes prescribed for kidney-related ailments, including nephritis (inflammation of the kidneys). However, the tradition is based on broad theoretical frameworks within TCM, such as balancing yin and yang or nourishing organ systems, rather than on empirical evidence.

There is a very limited body of modern scientific research specifically investigating Auricularia’s efficacy for nephritis. Most available studies focus on its general health benefits—such as immunomodulation, antioxidant properties, and cholesterol-lowering effects—rather than on direct effects on kidney inflammation or nephritis. No high-quality human clinical trials have validated its use for nephritis, and even animal or in vitro studies targeting nephritis are scarce or absent. Thus, while there is a tradition of its use for kidney health, scientific validation is essentially lacking.

In summary, the use of Auricularia for nephritis is primarily justified by tradition, with very weak evidence (rating of 1) and no robust scientific support currently available.
