Rating (out of 5): 2

Bassia scoparia (synonym: Kochia scoparia), commonly known as "broom cypress" or "kochia," has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) for urinary and kidney-related conditions, including nephritis. In TCM, the seeds (known as "Di Fu Zi") are believed to clear heat and dampness from the lower burner, and have been traditionally used to relieve symptoms such as painful urination, edema, and inflammation associated with kidney and urinary tract disorders. Classical texts often recommend Bassia scoparia seeds in herbal formulas targeting nephritis-like symptoms. However, modern scientific studies validating its efficacy and safety for nephritis are limited and mostly preclinical. Some in vitro and animal studies suggest anti-inflammatory and diuretic effects, which could theoretically benefit nephritis, but robust clinical trials in humans are lacking. Therefore, its use for nephritis is primarily justified by traditional practice rather than strong scientific evidence.
