Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Convolvulus prostratus, commonly known as Shankhpushpi, has been traditionally used in Ayurveda and other traditional systems of medicine for various health conditions, including as a brain tonic and for urinary disorders. In the context of nephritis (inflammation of the kidneys), its use is primarily supported by traditional knowledge rather than robust scientific validation. Ayurvedic texts describe Shankhpushpi as having diuretic and anti-inflammatory properties, which could theoretically be beneficial in urinary tract and kidney-related conditions, including nephritis. However, the majority of available scientific studies focus on its neuroprotective and cognitive-enhancing effects, with very limited research specifically addressing its efficacy in nephritis or other kidney inflammations.

Some animal studies and phytochemical analyses suggest that Convolvulus prostratus contains flavonoids and alkaloids with general anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects, which may offer indirect rationale for kidney support, but these findings are preliminary and not specifically focused on nephritis. There are no high-quality clinical trials or direct experimental evidence demonstrating its effectiveness for treating nephritis in humans. Thus, while its use for nephritis has a basis in traditional herbal medicine, scientific evidence for this application is currently weak to moderate at best.
