Euryale, known as Euryale ferox or "fox nut" (Qian Shi in Traditional Chinese Medicine), has a long history of use in traditional herbal systems, particularly in China and India. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Euryale seeds are considered beneficial for strengthening the kidneys, stabilizing essence, and stopping leakage of fluids, which includes treating conditions like nephritis (kidney inflammation). The traditional rationale is based on symptom patterns rather than modern pathological definitions; Euryale is believed to "tonify" the kidneys and help with urinary and reproductive issues, which are sometimes interpreted as nephritis or related kidney disorders. Modern scientific research on Euryale's effects on nephritis specifically is limited. While some studies have investigated Euryale's antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and diuretic properties, direct clinical evidence validating its efficacy for nephritis in humans is lacking. Most available research focuses on animal models, general kidney protection, or in vitro studies rather than controlled clinical trials in nephritis patients. Thus, while there is some preliminary pharmacological basis suggesting possible benefits for kidney health, the use of Euryale for nephritis is primarily justified by traditional usage, not by strong scientific evidence.
