Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Ophiopogon japonicus (commonly known as Mai Men Dong in Traditional Chinese Medicine, TCM) has a long history of use in East Asian herbal medicine, primarily for nourishing yin, moistening the lungs, and benefiting the stomach. Its use for nephritis (inflammation of the kidneys) is rooted in traditional practice rather than robust modern scientific validation. TCM practitioners have historically prescribed Ophiopogon in formulas aimed at treating symptoms associated with chronic nephritis, such as fatigue, edema, and proteinuria, based on the herb's reputed ability to "nourish kidney yin" and support fluid metabolism.

There is limited scientific research directly investigating Ophiopogon’s efficacy in treating nephritis. Some preclinical studies have suggested it has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, which could theoretically be beneficial in kidney inflammation. However, high-quality clinical trials in humans are lacking, and most of the available evidence comes from case reports, animal studies, or indirect support when Ophiopogon is used as part of a multi-herb formula. Thus, while traditional use is well-established, current scientific evidence is insufficient to fully validate or recommend Ophiopogon as a standalone treatment for nephritis. The evidence rating reflects the predominance of tradition over science in this context.
