Evidence supporting the use of: Rhubarb
For the health condition: Nephritis
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Rhubarb (Rheum palmatum and related species) has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) for various kidney-related conditions, including nephritis. In TCM, rhubarb is believed to "clear heat," "remove toxins," and promote bowel movements, which are thought to support renal function and reduce the buildup of waste products in nephritis (inflammation of the kidneys). Some traditional formulations containing rhubarb are used to manage symptoms such as edema and oliguria associated with nephritic conditions.
Modern scientific research on rhubarb’s efficacy for nephritis is limited and mostly preclinical. Some animal studies and small-scale clinical trials have suggested that rhubarb extracts may reduce proteinuria, inflammation, and improve kidney function in models of nephritis, possibly due to anti-inflammatory and anti-fibrotic effects. However, these studies are preliminary, often have methodological limitations, and there is insufficient high-quality clinical evidence to confirm efficacy and safety in humans. Additionally, rhubarb contains anthraquinones, which are potent laxatives and may have adverse effects, particularly in patients with compromised renal function.
In summary, while rhubarb is traditionally used for nephritis, and there is some early scientific interest, the current level of clinical evidence is low (rated 2/5). Use should be approached with caution, and more rigorous clinical studies are needed to establish its therapeutic value for nephritis.
