Evidence supporting the use of: Docosahexaenoic Acid
For the body system: Nerves
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 4
Docosahexaenoic Acid (DHA) is an omega-3 fatty acid that is highly concentrated in the brain and nervous system. Scientific validation supports its use in supporting the nerves and overall nervous system health. DHA is a critical structural component of neuronal membranes, and it plays essential roles in neurodevelopment, synaptic function, and neuroprotection.
Multiple studies have demonstrated that adequate DHA intake is important for normal brain development in infants and children, with some evidence suggesting cognitive and visual benefits. In adults, observational and interventional studies suggest that higher levels of DHA are associated with better maintenance of cognitive function and may help protect against neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s. Mechanistically, DHA is involved in modulating membrane fluidity, neurotransmitter release, and anti-inflammatory processes in neural tissues.
While more research is needed, especially in the context of preventing or treating specific neurological diseases, the existing body of scientific evidence justifies the use of DHA to support the nervous system, particularly for development and possibly for ongoing cognitive health. The ingredient is recognized by experts and regulatory authorities (such as EFSA and FDA) as beneficial for brain and nerve function, especially during pregnancy, infancy, and aging.
