Evidence supporting the use of: Antler horn
For the health condition: Nervous Exhaustion
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Antler horn, often referred to as "deer antler velvet," has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) for a variety of ailments, including conditions described as "nervous exhaustion," which may correspond to modern understandings of fatigue, stress, or neurasthenia. In TCM, antler horn is believed to "tonify the kidney" and strengthen "yang," which practitioners associate with increased vitality, stamina, and recovery from weakness or exhaustion. Its use for nervous exhaustion is primarily based on these traditional energetic concepts rather than on modern biomedical understanding.
Scientifically, there is minimal evidence to support the efficacy of antler horn or deer antler velvet for nervous exhaustion or related conditions. Some laboratory and animal studies suggest that certain components of deer antler velvet, such as growth factors and amino acids, might have general effects on physical performance or recovery. However, robust clinical trials in humans addressing its effects on nervous system fatigue, stress, or exhaustion are lacking. The few available human studies often suffer from small sample sizes, poor methodology, and lack of replication. As a result, its use for nervous exhaustion remains rooted in traditional beliefs rather than validated by modern scientific research.
