Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Beef liver has a long history of use in traditional medicine, particularly in European and American naturopathic and organotherapy traditions, for addressing symptoms related to "nervous exhaustion," a term historically used to describe what might now be called chronic fatigue or neurasthenia. The rationale for its use is primarily based on the doctrine of signatures and the observation that beef liver is rich in nutrients thought to benefit the nervous system, such as B vitamins (including B12), iron, and certain amino acids. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, beef liver extracts were sometimes recommended by eclectic and naturopathic practitioners for individuals suffering from fatigue, anemia, and general debility, all of which were sometimes grouped under "nervous exhaustion." However, while beef liver is undeniably nutrient-dense and can address nutritional deficiencies that may contribute to feelings of fatigue or low energy, there is no strong scientific evidence or clinical trial data specifically validating its use for "nervous exhaustion" as a distinct clinical entity. Modern medicine recognizes the nutritional value of liver, particularly in treating anemia due to B12 or iron deficiency, which can overlap with symptoms of fatigue, but does not endorse it as a remedy for nervous exhaustion per se. Thus, its use for this purpose is justified primarily by historical and traditional practices, with limited scientific support beyond its general nutritional benefits.
