Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Hellebore (referring generally to plants in the Helleborus genus or sometimes Veratrum species) has a long history of use in European and ancient herbal medicine. Its application for “nervous exhaustion”—a term historically used to describe symptoms such as fatigue, depression, and anxiety—stems primarily from traditional practices rather than scientific validation. In ancient Greece, hellebore was used to treat various mental disturbances and so-called “melancholia.” The reputation of hellebore as a “purging” herb for madness or nervous disorders persisted into the Middle Ages and early modern herbalism, although its use was often dangerous due to the plant’s high toxicity. There is little to no high-quality modern scientific evidence supporting its efficacy for nervous exhaustion, and hellebore is now recognized as being potentially poisonous, with toxic effects on the heart and nervous system. Contemporary herbalists rarely use hellebore for this purpose due to safety concerns and lack of reliable data. Thus, while the use of hellebore for nervous exhaustion is documented in historical sources, it is not substantiated by modern clinical research and is not recommended today.
