Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Korean Angelica (Angelica gigas) has a long history of use in traditional Korean and East Asian medicine, particularly as a restorative and tonic herb. In traditional practices, it is often employed for conditions described as “weakness,” “fatigue,” or “nervous exhaustion,” symptoms that overlap with what modern contexts might classify as nervous exhaustion or neurasthenia. The root is believed to nourish “Qi” (vital energy) and blood, which are thought to be depleted in cases of overwork, stress, or convalescence. Traditional herbal formulas such as Danggui Jakyak-san, containing Angelica species, are prescribed for symptoms including tiredness, sleep disturbances, and mild anxiety.

However, scientific evidence specifically validating Korean Angelica’s efficacy for nervous exhaustion is limited. Existing modern research has focused more on its possible anticancer, neuroprotective, and anti-inflammatory properties, rather than its adaptogenic or nervine effects. Most clinical data do not directly address nervous exhaustion as a diagnosis. Thus, while its use for this purpose is well-supported by traditional texts and practice, there is insufficient high-quality scientific research to strongly validate these claims. The current rating reflects the strength of traditional usage rather than robust clinical evidence.
