Evidence supporting the use of: Liquid liver fractions
For the health condition: Nervous Exhaustion
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Liquid liver fractions have been traditionally used as a tonic in various systems of medicine, especially in the early to mid-20th century, to support individuals experiencing "nervous exhaustion"—a term historically used to describe symptoms such as fatigue, weakness, and mental burnout. The rationale behind this use stems from the liver's role as a rich source of nutrients, including B vitamins (notably B12), iron, folate, and amino acids, all of which are essential for healthy nervous system function and energy production. In historical medical literature, products like "liquid liver extract" were sometimes prescribed to convalescents, people with anemia, or those diagnosed with "neurasthenia," a broad and now-obsolete diagnosis encompassing what we might today call chronic fatigue or stress-related disorders.
However, while the tradition is well-documented, robust scientific validation for the use of liquid liver fractions specifically for "nervous exhaustion" is lacking. Most benefits are presumed to be due to correcting nutritional deficiencies, particularly B12 deficiency, which can cause fatigue and neurological symptoms. In people with adequate nutrition, there is little evidence that liver fractions confer additional benefits for nervous exhaustion. Thus, while the use is supported by historical practice and some plausible nutritional rationale, high-quality clinical trials are lacking.
