Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Ox-derived ingredients, such as ox bile, ox gall, or even ox nerve tissue, have historically been used in traditional medicines, particularly in systems like Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and certain branches of European folk medicine. In TCM, animal-derived substances, including those from oxen, have been included in various formulations thought to "nourish" or "calm" the nervous system, treating symptoms described as "nervous exhaustion" (which might encompass what is now recognized as neurasthenia, fatigue, anxiety, or burnout). These uses are based on historical texts and empirical traditions rather than modern scientific studies.

However, there is little to no robust scientific evidence from controlled clinical trials to validate the efficacy of ox-derived substances for nervous exhaustion. Some historical texts reference preparations using ox nerves or ox bile for calming effects, but these are largely anecdotal and not supported by modern pharmacological research. Therefore, while the use is justified by tradition, the evidence is weak, and such treatments have not been adopted into contemporary medical practice.
