For the health condition: Nervousness
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Alpha-lactalbumin is a whey protein found in milk that is rich in tryptophan, an essential amino acid and precursor to serotonin—a neurotransmitter associated with mood regulation and anxiety. The interest in alpha-lactalbumin for nervousness (including symptoms of stress or mild anxiety) stems from its potential to elevate brain tryptophan levels, thereby possibly enhancing serotonin synthesis. Several small clinical studies have explored this relationship. For instance, a randomized controlled trial published in the journal American Journal of Clinical Nutrition (2002) found that healthy subjects who consumed an alpha-lactalbumin-rich diet exhibited increased plasma tryptophan ratios and reported reduced cortisol responses and improved mood under acute stress, as compared to controls. Other studies have shown similar biochemical changes, though the effects on subjective measures of nervousness or anxiety are generally modest and sometimes inconsistent. While the available evidence suggests a plausible mechanism and some benefit in stress response or resilience, the body of research is still limited by small sample sizes and short durations. There is not yet strong consensus on its efficacy for treating clinical nervousness or anxiety disorders. In summary, the use of alpha-lactalbumin for nervousness is supported by a moderate degree of scientific evidence, mainly in the context of stress reactivity, but not enough to warrant widespread use as a primary treatment for anxiety.
