Rating (out of 5): 3
Brahmi (Bacopa monnieri) has a long history of use in Ayurvedic medicine as a "medhya rasayana"—a tonic for the mind and nervous system. Traditionally, it has been used to alleviate symptoms related to anxiety, stress, and nervousness. In recent years, scientific studies have begun to investigate these claims. Several randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trials have indicated that Bacopa monnieri may have anxiolytic (anxiety-reducing) effects in humans. For example, research published in Phytotherapy Research (2008) and Journal of Ethnopharmacology (2013) found that standardized extracts of Bacopa improved measures of anxiety and cognitive function compared to placebo.
Proposed mechanisms include modulation of neurotransmitters such as serotonin and acetylcholine, as well as antioxidant activity which may protect neural tissue from stress-related damage. However, while the current body of evidence is promising, sample sizes tend to be small, and there is variability in dosage and preparation across studies. Therefore, while there is scientific support for Brahmi’s use in reducing nervousness, the overall quality and quantity of evidence is moderate rather than strong. Larger, more rigorous clinical trials are needed to confirm these effects and establish standardized dosing guidelines.
