Evidence supporting the use of: Cannabidiol
For the health condition: Nervousness
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Cannabidiol (CBD), a non-psychoactive compound found in cannabis, is increasingly used to address symptoms of nervousness and anxiety. Scientific evidence for its effectiveness is moderate, with several preclinical and clinical studies supporting its anxiolytic (anxiety-reducing) properties. A notable randomized, double-blind study published in 2011 in the journal Neuropsychopharmacology found that CBD significantly reduced anxiety, cognitive impairment, and discomfort in subjects with social anxiety disorder during a simulated public speaking test compared to placebo. Additionally, a 2019 review in The Permanente Journal reported that CBD may reduce anxiety in both animal and human studies, although the authors note that most clinical research is preliminary and further large-scale trials are needed. Mechanistically, CBD is believed to interact with serotonin receptors (specifically 5-HT1A) in the brain, which play a role in mood regulation and anxiety. While CBD appears generally well-tolerated with a favorable side-effect profile, the optimal dosing and long-term safety remain to be fully established. In summary, there is emerging scientific validation for the use of cannabidiol to support or treat nervousness, but the current evidence base is not yet robust enough to warrant unequivocal clinical recommendations.
