Evidence supporting the use of: Ginseng, Panax
For the health condition: Nervousness
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Panax ginseng has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, particularly in East Asia, where it is used as an adaptogen to improve overall vitality, combat fatigue, and help the body cope with stress. In traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), ginseng is thought to "calm the spirit" and is sometimes prescribed for symptoms that may include nervousness or restlessness. However, the modern clinical evidence supporting the use of Panax ginseng specifically for nervousness or anxiety is limited and not robust. Some preclinical and small clinical studies suggest that ginseng may have mild adaptogenic and anti-stress effects, potentially through modulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and neurotransmitter activity. However, high-quality, large-scale randomized controlled trials directly assessing its effects on nervousness or anxiety are lacking, and results are often inconsistent. Most of the support for using Panax ginseng for nervousness arises from traditional practices rather than strong scientific validation. Therefore, while it has a traditional basis for use in this context, the scientific evidence is moderate at best, and more research is needed to establish clear efficacy for this indication.
