Jamaican Dogwood (Piscidia piscipula) has a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine, particularly in the Caribbean and parts of North America. Traditionally, it has been employed as a remedy for nervousness, anxiety, insomnia, and pain. Historical accounts describe its use by indigenous peoples and herbalists as a sedative and nervine, believed to calm the nervous system and relieve symptoms related to nervousness and restlessness.

The primary constituents thought to contribute to these effects are isoflavonoids, rotenoids, and other alkaloids present in the bark and root of the plant. However, the majority of evidence supporting its use for nervousness is anecdotal or based on traditional practices, rather than robust clinical research. While some animal studies suggest that Jamaican Dogwood may have sedative and analgesic properties, direct clinical studies on humans evaluating its efficacy for nervousness are lacking.

Due to potential toxicity, especially in high doses, and a lack of high-quality scientific validation, contemporary herbalists use Jamaican Dogwood with caution. Its use for nervousness today is largely based on traditional knowledge rather than scientific evidence. Further research is needed to confirm its safety and effectiveness for this indication.
