For the health condition: Nervousness
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Spikenard (Nardostachys jatamansi) has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine, where it has been employed to calm the mind, reduce agitation, and support restful sleep. Ancient texts often describe Spikenard as a nervine tonic, believed to balance the nervous system and alleviate symptoms associated with stress and nervousness. The roots of Spikenard are commonly prepared as powders, oils, or decoctions and prescribed for conditions like insomnia, anxiety, and restlessness. While there is a strong traditional basis for its use, modern scientific research on Spikenard’s effects on nervousness and related conditions is limited. Some preliminary animal studies suggest that extracts of Spikenard may have sedative and anxiolytic (anxiety-reducing) properties, possibly due to its influence on neurotransmitters in the brain. However, these findings are not yet robust, and well-designed clinical trials in humans are lacking. Therefore, while Spikenard’s use for nervousness is well-justified by tradition, scientific validation remains insufficient at this time.
