Evidence supporting the use of: Velvet
For the health condition: Nervousness
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Velvet, often referring to deer velvet (the soft, growing antler of deer), has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine and other Asian traditional systems. It has been used for various health conditions, including enhancing vitality, supporting joint health, and treating sexual dysfunction. Its use for nervousness, however, is based mainly on traditional beliefs rather than robust scientific study. Traditional texts suggest that deer velvet tonifies the "kidney," which in Chinese medicine is sometimes linked to emotional resilience and stress management. However, these concepts do not directly map onto modern understandings of nervousness or anxiety. There is very limited scientific research specifically examining deer velvet or similar "velvet" products for the treatment of nervousness. Most clinical studies have focused on other purported effects, such as improving athletic performance or joint function. Thus, while there is a tradition of using velvet in herbal formulations intended for general vitality or stress, there is little direct evidence—traditional or scientific—that specifically supports its efficacy for nervousness. The evidence rating is low, reflecting the absence of modern clinical trials and the indirect nature of traditional claims.
