Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Vitamin B6 (pyridoxal 5'-phosphate) has been traditionally used to support the nervous system, and by extension, to address symptoms such as nervousness, anxiety, and irritability. The rationale for its use is grounded in the vitamin’s role as a cofactor in the synthesis of neurotransmitters like serotonin, dopamine, and gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), which are crucial for mood regulation and nervous system function. Historical and naturopathic literature has suggested that B6 supplementation may help alleviate mild nervous system disturbances, especially in cases linked to dietary insufficiency or increased metabolic demand (e.g., pregnancy, premenstrual syndrome). However, scientific evidence specifically supporting the use of vitamin B6 for treating "nervousness"—as an isolated symptom in the general population—is limited. Some small studies have examined B6 supplementation for premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and found modest reductions in mood-related symptoms, including irritability and anxiety, but these findings cannot be directly translated to general nervousness. There are also case reports describing mood changes and nervous symptoms in people with severe B6 deficiency, which resolve with supplementation. Nevertheless, controlled clinical trials directly assessing B6 for non-specific nervousness are lacking. Overall, the use of B6 for nervousness is better supported by tradition and biological plausibility than by robust clinical evidence.
