Atractylone is a sesquiterpenoid compound isolated from Atractylodes species, which are key herbs in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). Historically, extracts of Atractylodes rhizome have been used in TCM formulations for various conditions, including those described as "wind-dampness" syndromes, which can manifest as pain or numbness in the limbs. Some traditional texts refer to the use of Atractylodes for symptoms that may correlate with neuralgia or neuritis, such as muscle aches, numbness, and weakness, though these terms are not directly equivalent to the biomedical definitions. However, the use of pure atractylone for neuralgia or neuritis is not well established in the traditional literature; rather, it is the whole herb or extracts thereof that are used in multi-herb formulas. Scientifically, there is limited research on atractylone itself for neuralgia or neuritis. Some laboratory studies suggest anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects of atractylone, but these are preliminary and not specifically focused on neuralgia or neuritis. There are no robust clinical trials or systematic reviews that validate its efficacy for these conditions. Therefore, its use for neuralgia and neuritis is supported mainly by tradition and historical use of the parent herb, with minimal direct scientific evidence for the isolated compound.
