Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Frankincense, also known as Boswellia serrata, has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, particularly in Ayurvedic and Middle Eastern practices. It has been used for centuries for its purported anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects, which has led to its traditional application in conditions involving nerve pain such as neuralgia and neuritis. However, scientific studies specifically investigating frankincense for neuralgia or neuritis are extremely limited. Most available research focuses on its general anti-inflammatory properties and its efficacy in conditions like osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and some inflammatory bowel diseases. These effects are attributed mainly to boswellic acids found in frankincense, which have demonstrated the ability to inhibit pro-inflammatory enzymes in vitro and in animal models. Despite these findings, direct clinical evidence supporting the use of frankincense for neuralgia or neuritis is lacking. Therefore, its use for these conditions remains rooted in tradition rather than robust scientific validation. Current medical guidelines do not recognize frankincense as a treatment for neuralgia or neuritis, and more rigorous human studies would be needed to justify its use for these specific neurological conditions.
