Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Ligustilide is a major bioactive component found in several traditional Chinese medicinal herbs, including Angelica sinensis (Dong Quai) and Ligusticum chuanxiong (Chuanxiong). These herbs have a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) formulas for treating conditions associated with blood stasis, pain, and "wind" disorders, which can encompass symptoms similar to neuralgia (nerve pain) and neuritis (nerve inflammation). The rationale in TCM for using these herbs includes promoting blood circulation and alleviating pain, rather than targeting neuralgia or neuritis in a manner defined by modern Western medicine.

Scientific studies on ligustilide itself are limited, and most available research is preclinical, involving animal models or in vitro systems. Some evidence suggests that ligustilide may have neuroprotective, anti-inflammatory, and analgesic properties. For example, studies indicate ligustilide can inhibit inflammatory mediators and attenuate neuropathic pain in rodent models. However, robust clinical evidence in humans for the treatment of neuralgia or neuritis is lacking. Therefore, while traditional use supports its application for conditions resembling neuralgia and neuritis, and preclinical data are promising, there is insufficient high-quality clinical evidence to fully justify or validate its use for these specific conditions by Western medical standards.
