Paeoniflorin is a bioactive compound extracted from the root of Paeonia lactiflora (commonly known as peony). There is emerging scientific evidence suggesting that paeoniflorin may have neuroprotective, anti-inflammatory, and analgesic properties relevant to neuralgia and neuritis. Preclinical studies, primarily in animal models and in vitro systems, have demonstrated that paeoniflorin can inhibit the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines, reduce oxidative stress, and modulate pain signaling pathways. For example, research published in Journal of Ethnopharmacology (2011) and Neurochemical Research (2018) reported that paeoniflorin reduced neuropathic pain and attenuated nerve inflammation in rodent models.

However, high-quality human clinical trials are lacking. Most evidence is from laboratory and animal studies, and direct clinical efficacy in neuralgia or neuritis has not been firmly established. In traditional Chinese medicine, peony root has been used for pain and inflammation, but paeoniflorin itself is not clearly documented as a traditional remedy for neuralgia or neuritis. Thus, while there is some scientific basis for the use of paeoniflorin in these conditions, the evidence is preliminary, and more rigorous human studies are needed to confirm therapeutic benefits.
