Sesame oil has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, particularly in Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine, for conditions involving nerve pain and inflammation such as neuralgia and neuritis. In Ayurveda, sesame oil is considered to have warming and nourishing properties and is frequently used in external massage (abhyanga) to soothe sore muscles and nerves, purportedly helping conditions characterized by nerve pain. The oil is believed to penetrate deeply into tissues, providing lubrication and reducing inflammation, which theoretically may benefit neural disorders. However, the majority of claims for sesame oil’s efficacy in neuralgia and neuritis are based on traditional usage and anecdotal reports, rather than robust clinical evidence.

Scientific studies investigating the direct effects of sesame oil on neuralgia or neuritis in humans are sparse. Some animal and in vitro studies suggest that sesame oil contains antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compounds (such as sesamin, sesamol, and vitamin E) which may have neuroprotective effects. However, these findings have not been directly translated into clinical evidence for neuralgia or neuritis treatment. As such, the primary justification for using sesame oil in these conditions remains traditional, with limited scientific validation.
