Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Tree Peony (Paeonia suffruticosa) root, also known as “Mudanpi” in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), has a longstanding history of use for a variety of ailments, including conditions characterized by pain, inflammation, and "blood stasis." In TCM, neuralgia and neuritis are not defined in biomedical terms, but symptoms such as nerve pain or inflammation are often interpreted as manifestations of internal imbalances, stagnation, or excess heat. Tree Peony root is commonly included in multi-herb formulas intended to "clear heat," "dispel stasis," and relieve pain, and its use for conditions resembling neuralgia and neuritis is thus rooted in these traditional frameworks. From a scientific perspective, there are laboratory studies indicating that compounds in Tree Peony root—such as paeonol and paeonoside—exhibit anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties in animal models. However, direct clinical evidence supporting its efficacy for neuralgia or neuritis in humans is lacking. Most available scientific studies focus on general anti-inflammatory or analgesic effects, not specifically on nerve-related pain or inflammation. Thus, while its use is traditional and supported by some pharmacological rationale, robust evidence from clinical trials is absent, and its use for neuralgia and neuritis remains primarily justified by traditional practice.
