For the health condition: Nightmares
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Calea zacatechichi, also known as "dream herb" or "Mexican dream herb," is traditionally used by the Chontal people of Oaxaca, Mexico, for its purported effects on dreams. The herb is most commonly associated with enhancing dream recall and inducing lucid dreams, rather than specifically treating or preventing nightmares. Historical ethnobotanical records indicate that indigenous healers used Calea zacatechichi in rituals to receive messages or clarity through dreams, and users often report more vivid and memorable dreams. However, there is little direct traditional reference to its use for alleviating or treating nightmares specifically, though its general impact on dream states is noted.
From a scientific standpoint, evidence supporting its effectiveness in treating nightmares is extremely limited. Only a handful of small-scale studies have examined Calea zacatechichi’s effects on sleep and dreaming, and these primarily focus on its influence on dream vividness, not on nightmares. There is no robust clinical evidence demonstrating efficacy for nightmare reduction or prevention. Therefore, while its use for influencing dream states is supported by tradition, direct application for nightmares is weakly supported and primarily anecdotal.
