Reishi mushroom (Ganoderma lucidum) has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), where it is known as "Lingzhi." While reishi is most commonly associated with immune support, vitality, and longevity, there are folk traditions and some herbal compendia that mention its use for calming the spirit and promoting restful sleep. In TCM, nightmares are sometimes seen as a result of "disturbed Shen" (spirit), which can be caused by imbalances such as excessive heat, deficiency, or stress. Reishi is considered a "Shen tonic," believed to nourish the heart, calm the mind, and help with insomnia, anxiety, and agitation, which could indirectly support those experiencing nightmares. However, evidence is largely anecdotal or based on traditional doctrine rather than rigorous scientific studies specifically targeting nightmares. Scientific research on reishi's effects on sleep quality is limited but suggests some potential for improving subjective sleep and reducing fatigue, possibly due to its adaptogenic and anxiolytic properties. Still, there are no well-designed clinical trials directly investigating reishi’s effects on nightmares themselves. Therefore, while there is historical precedent for its use in this context, the evidence supporting its efficacy for treating nightmares is weak and should be interpreted cautiously.
