Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Aloe vera has been scientifically investigated for its potential benefits in supporting oral surgery recovery. Several studies have explored its anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and wound-healing properties. Aloe vera gel contains bioactive compounds such as polysaccharides, glycoproteins, and vitamins that are believed to contribute to tissue repair and reduce inflammation. Clinical trials and in vitro studies have shown that topical application of Aloe vera can accelerate healing of oral mucosal wounds and reduce postoperative discomfort after procedures such as tooth extractions and periodontal surgeries. For instance, a randomized controlled trial published in the Journal of Clinical and Experimental Dentistry (2016) demonstrated that patients who applied Aloe vera gel to extraction sites experienced reduced pain and improved wound healing compared to controls. Other studies have reported a decrease in microbial load and prevention of secondary infections when Aloe vera was used as an adjunct in oral wound care. However, while the evidence is promising, most studies are small and some have methodological limitations. As such, Aloe vera is considered a supportive adjunct rather than a primary treatment in oral surgery recovery. Its use is generally regarded as safe when applied topically, but more large-scale, high-quality research is needed to fully establish its efficacy.
