Bifidobacterium lactis is a probiotic bacterium that has garnered interest for its potential to support oral health, especially in the context of oral surgery. Scientific studies suggest that probiotics, including B. lactis, may aid in reducing postoperative complications such as infections, inflammation, and delayed healing. The primary mechanisms proposed include modulation of the local immune response, inhibition of pathogenic bacteria, and enhancement of mucosal barrier function. While most research has centered on Lactobacillus and other Bifidobacterium species, B. lactis specifically has shown promise in in vitro and animal models for inhibiting periodontopathogens and modulating inflammatory responses in oral tissues.

Clinical trials directly investigating B. lactis in oral surgery patients remain limited. However, several small studies and systematic reviews have reported that probiotics can reduce postoperative infections and improve wound healing when used as adjuncts to standard care.
