Diclofenac is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) widely used in oral surgery for its analgesic (pain-relieving), anti-inflammatory, and antipyretic (fever-reducing) properties. Its use is strongly supported by scientific evidence. Numerous randomized clinical trials and systematic reviews have demonstrated that diclofenac is effective in controlling postoperative pain and inflammation following oral surgical procedures, such as third molar (wisdom tooth) extractions, periodontal surgery, and implant placements.

Diclofenac works by inhibiting the cyclooxygenase (COX) enzymes, which are involved in the synthesis of prostaglandins—key mediators of inflammation and pain. By reducing prostaglandin production, diclofenac decreases swelling, pain, and discomfort after oral surgery. Comparative studies have shown that diclofenac is at least as effective as other NSAIDs (such as ibuprofen) in managing postoperative oral pain, and sometimes provides longer-lasting relief due to its pharmacokinetic profile.

Guidelines from dental and maxillofacial surgery associations frequently recommend NSAIDs, including diclofenac, as first-line agents for pain management after oral surgery, unless contraindicated. The drug is available in multiple formulations suitable for dental use, including oral tablets, dispersible tablets, and injectable forms.

Overall, the use of diclofenac in oral surgery is well-validated by scientific research, and its efficacy and safety profile are well understood when used as directed.
