Eugenol, a major component of clove oil, has been used in dentistry for over a century, primarily as an analgesic and antiseptic. Its application in oral surgery is supported by both its traditional use and scientific investigations. Eugenol is commonly included in dental materials such as zinc oxide-eugenol cement, which is used for temporary fillings and as a sedative dressing for exposed dental pulp or after tooth extraction. Scientific studies have shown that eugenol possesses local anesthetic properties by blocking nerve conduction, as well as significant antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects, which can help reduce post-operative pain and infection risk.

However, while laboratory and some clinical studies validate these pharmacological effects, the evidence base is not exhaustive. Clinical trials specifically evaluating eugenol's efficacy in improving oral surgery outcomes (such as wound healing or infection rates) are limited, and concerns exist regarding its potential cytotoxicity to oral tissues at higher concentrations. Despite this, its use in formulations designed to support tissue healing and pain relief after dental procedures is generally accepted in dental practice. The overall evidence suggests that eugenol’s use is justified both by tradition and by a moderate level of scientific validation.
