Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Hydrocolloid dressings are supported by scientific evidence for use in oral surgery, particularly for the management of oral wounds and post-surgical sites. Hydrocolloids are occlusive wound dressings that form a gel upon contact with wound exudate, creating a moist healing environment. This moist environment has been shown to promote epithelialization, reduce pain, and accelerate wound healing compared to traditional gauze dressings. Several clinical studies and reviews have evaluated hydrocolloid dressings in oral surgery contexts, such as after tooth extractions, periodontal surgery, and mucosal grafts. For example, randomized controlled trials have demonstrated that hydrocolloid dressings can reduce post-operative pain and improve patient comfort, as well as decrease healing time in intraoral wounds. Furthermore, hydrocolloid dressings act as a barrier to bacterial contamination, providing an additional layer of protection to the healing site. Despite these advantages, the evidence is moderate rather than high, mainly due to the relatively small scale of available studies and some variability in outcomes. However, systematic reviews and clinical guidelines often recommend hydrocolloid dressings as a valid option for managing oral wounds, especially when moist healing is desired. Thus, the use of hydrocolloid in oral surgery is justified by a reasonable body of scientific evidence, although larger and higher-quality studies would help to further clarify its efficacy and optimal indications.
