Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Lactobacillus fermentum has been investigated for its potential benefits in oral health, particularly in the context of oral surgery recovery and prevention of postoperative complications such as infection, inflammation, and delayed healing. Scientific studies suggest that L. fermentum, as a probiotic, may help modulate the oral microbiome, inhibit the growth of pathogenic bacteria, and enhance mucosal immunity. This is particularly relevant after oral surgery, where the balance of oral microorganisms is often disrupted, increasing susceptibility to infection and delayed wound healing.

Several clinical trials and in vitro studies have shown that L. fermentum exhibits antimicrobial activity against pathogens associated with oral diseases, such as Streptococcus mutans and Porphyromonas gingivalis. Moreover, probiotics including L. fermentum have demonstrated the ability to reduce postoperative pain, swelling, and risk of alveolar osteitis ("dry socket") in some studies when administered as adjuncts to standard care following procedures like tooth extraction.

While there is accumulating evidence supporting the adjunctive use of L. fermentum in oral surgery, the overall quality and quantity of clinical trials remain moderate, and further large-scale, randomized controlled trials are needed to establish standardized protocols and confirm efficacy. Therefore, the evidence rating is a 3 out of 5, reflecting moderate scientific support but not yet universally established clinical guidelines.
