Lactobacillus (mixed) and Oral Surgery: Scientific Evidence
Lactobacillus species, commonly known as probiotics, have been investigated for their role in oral health, including in the context of oral surgery. Scientific studies suggest that these probiotics may help reduce postoperative complications, such as infection, inflammation, and delayed healing, by modulating the oral microbiome and enhancing local immune responses.
Clinical trials and systematic reviews indicate that perioperative use of probiotics, particularly Lactobacillus strains, can decrease the incidence and severity of postoperative infections, reduce wound dehiscence, and promote faster mucosal healing following procedures like tooth extraction and periodontal surgery. The proposed mechanisms include competitive inhibition of pathogenic bacteria, production of antimicrobial substances (such as bacteriocins and lactic acid), and stimulation of mucosal immunity.
A 2022 systematic review (e.g., Kachrimanidou et al., "Probiotics as Adjuncts in Oral Surgery: A Systematic Review", Frontiers in Oral Health) concluded that adjunctive probiotic therapy, especially with Lactobacillus strains, significantly improved clinical outcomes after oral surgery compared to standard care alone. However, the authors also noted heterogeneity in probiotic strains, dosages, and study designs, and called for larger, high-quality RCTs to confirm these findings.
In summary, while the evidence is not yet definitive, there is a moderate and growing body of scientific support for using mixed Lactobacillus probiotics to improve recovery and reduce complications after oral surgery.
