Sangre de Grado (also known as Dragon's Blood, derived from the sap of the Croton lechleri tree) has been traditionally used in South American medicine for wound healing and as an antimicrobial agent. Recent scientific studies have investigated its potential applications in oral health, particularly in the context of oral surgery. The sap contains proanthocyanidins and taspine, compounds with demonstrated anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and wound-healing properties. Several in vitro and animal studies have shown that Sangre de Grado promotes faster wound closure, enhances collagen formation, and reduces local inflammation when applied topically. Additionally, its antimicrobial activity against oral pathogens like Streptococcus mutans and Candida albicans suggests a role in preventing postoperative infections.

However, while preclinical evidence is promising, high-quality human clinical trials specifically assessing its safety and efficacy in oral surgical settings are limited. Some small-scale clinical studies and case reports have indicated reduced pain and improved healing in oral ulcers and post-extraction sockets when Sangre de Grado is used, but these studies are not large or rigorous enough to draw definitive conclusions. Overall, the use of Sangre de Grado in oral surgery is supported by a growing body of scientific evidence, but further research is necessary to establish standardized protocols and confirm its benefits in humans.
