Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Sea Buckthorn Oil has some scientific evidence supporting its use in oral surgery recovery and oral mucosal healing. Several studies, mostly from Eastern Europe and Asia, have investigated its topical application for conditions such as oral mucositis, ulcerative lesions, and post-surgical wound healing. The oil is rich in omega-7 fatty acids, carotenoids, tocopherols, and flavonoids, which confer anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and tissue-regenerative properties. These bioactive compounds are thought to promote epithelial regeneration, reduce inflammation, and support healing of oral tissues.

Notably, small clinical trials and animal studies have demonstrated accelerated healing of oral ulcers and reduced inflammation when Sea Buckthorn Oil is applied to oral wounds. For example, a randomized controlled trial published in the Chinese Journal of Stomatology (2014) showed improved healing and pain relief in patients with recurrent aphthous stomatitis treated with topical Sea Buckthorn Oil. Other studies have reported positive effects on post-extraction sockets and mucositis lesions, although sample sizes are often small and methodologies variable.

Overall, while there is promising early scientific evidence for Sea Buckthorn Oil's benefits in oral surgery recovery, larger and more rigorous clinical trials are needed to fully validate its efficacy and establish standardized protocols for use in dental practice.
