Evidence supporting the use of: Abalone
For the health condition: Osteoporosis
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Abalone, a type of marine mollusk, has a history of use in traditional medicine, particularly in East Asian countries such as China and Korea. It is prized for its purported health benefits, which include nourishing the body, improving eyesight, and supporting bone health. The shell of abalone, known as "Shi Jue Ming" in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), has been used historically for conditions related to the liver and eyes, and sometimes for calming purposes. While abalone meat is a source of protein, calcium, and other minerals, the traditional rationale for its use in bone health, including osteoporosis, is mostly based on its calcium content and general tonic properties in TCM. However, scientific studies specifically evaluating abalone or its shell for the prevention or treatment of osteoporosis are lacking. There are no robust clinical trials or mechanistic studies in humans that confirm any benefit for osteoporosis. Thus, its use for this condition remains grounded in tradition and nutritional theory rather than validated scientific evidence.
