Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Antler, particularly deer antler (often referred to as "deer antler velvet"), has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) for strengthening bones and improving vitality, which includes the treatment and prevention of conditions like osteoporosis. The theoretical basis in TCM is that antler tonifies the kidney and liver, organs believed in TCM to govern bone health. However, scientific evidence supporting the efficacy of antler supplements for osteoporosis is sparse and inconclusive. Few animal studies suggest possible benefits for bone density, attributed to growth factors and minerals present in the velvet. However, robust clinical trials in humans are lacking, and systematic reviews highlight the absence of high-quality evidence. As such, while antler is traditionally used to support bone health and treat osteoporosis in some cultures, its actual effectiveness is not scientifically validated, and the available evidence is rated as very weak. Routine use for osteoporosis should not be encouraged without further research, and it should not replace established osteoporosis therapies.
