Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Antler horn, particularly from deer, has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) for a variety of health conditions, including those related to bone health such as osteoporosis. In TCM, antler horn (known as Lu Rong) is believed to "nourish the kidney" and "strengthen bones and tendons," which aligns metaphorically with Western concepts of treating bone loss. The historical texts and TCM practitioners have recommended antler horn as a tonic for aging-related degeneration and for increasing vitality, which includes maintaining bone strength.

However, the modern scientific evidence supporting antler horn as a treatment for osteoporosis is limited and not robust. Some animal studies have suggested that compounds found in antler (such as growth factors and collagen) might have osteogenic effects, but these findings have not been consistently replicated in humans, nor are they widely accepted in mainstream medical practice. Clinical trials in humans are scarce, small in scale, and often lack rigorous controls. As a result, while antler horn remains a popular supplement in some cultures, its use for osteoporosis is supported primarily by traditional rather than scientific evidence.
