Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Avocado Soy Unsaponifiables (ASU) are extracts derived from avocado and soybean oils, primarily studied for their effects on osteoarthritis. However, some emerging scientific evidence suggests potential benefits in osteoporosis management, though the evidence is not robust. Preclinical studies, particularly in animal models, have shown that ASU may reduce bone loss and improve bone microarchitecture. This is thought to be mediated through anti-inflammatory effects, inhibition of osteoclastogenesis (the process of bone resorption), and stimulation of osteoblasts (cells responsible for bone formation). For example, a 2013 study in rats indicated that ASU supplementation could mitigate bone loss associated with estrogen deficiency.

Clinical evidence in humans for osteoporosis is limited. Most human trials have focused on osteoarthritis, with some suggesting improved cartilage repair and reduced symptoms. There are very few, if any, well-powered randomized controlled trials (RCTs) directly evaluating ASU for osteoporosis prevention or treatment in humans. Thus, while the mechanistic rationale and some animal data exist, the clinical evidence base is weak and does not currently justify ASU as a standard therapy for osteoporosis. More rigorous research is needed before ASU can be recommended for this indication.
