Evidence supporting the use of: Chinese Ligustrum berry
For the health condition: Osteoporosis
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Ligustrum lucidum (Chinese privet, or "Nü Zhen Zi") berries have a long history of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), where they are regarded as a tonic for the liver and kidneys. In TCM theory, the kidneys are believed to "govern the bones," and herbs that nourish kidney yin, such as Ligustrum berries, are thought to help maintain bone health and treat conditions like osteoporosis. However, the traditional use is based on these energetic and organ theory principles rather than direct clinical or mechanistic evidence for osteoporosis.
Modern scientific investigation into Ligustrum lucidum's effects on bone health is limited. Some preclinical studies (primarily in vitro and animal research) have suggested that extracts of Ligustrum lucidum may have osteoprotective effects, possibly by modulating bone metabolism or influencing osteoblast and osteoclast activity. However, these findings remain preliminary, and there are few, if any, robust human clinical trials demonstrating efficacy for osteoporosis prevention or treatment. Thus, while there is some emerging scientific interest, the primary justification for its use in osteoporosis remains rooted in traditional practice rather than strong, validated scientific evidence.
