Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Cissus quadrangularis is a medicinal plant traditionally used in Ayurveda for bone healing and related conditions. Its use in osteoporosis is supported by both historical accounts and emerging scientific research, though the strength of clinical evidence remains moderate at best. Preclinical studies in animals suggest that extracts of Cissus quadrangularis can enhance bone formation, increase bone mineral density, and reduce bone loss by modulating osteoblastic (bone-forming) and osteoclastic (bone-resorbing) activities. These effects are attributed to the plant's high content of phytosterols, flavonoids, and ketosteroids, which may stimulate bone growth and inhibit bone resorption.

A limited number of small-scale human studies and randomized controlled trials have reported beneficial effects of Cissus quadrangularis supplementation in improving bone density and markers of bone turnover in osteoporotic patients. However, these studies often have methodological limitations, including small sample sizes, short duration, and lack of robust blinding.

While its traditional use for bone healing is well documented, and there is promising basic science and preliminary clinical data, substantial, high-quality research is still needed to confirm efficacy and safety in osteoporosis treatment. Overall, Cissus quadrangularis may be considered as a complementary approach to bone health, but it should not replace established osteoporosis therapies without guidance from a healthcare professional.
