Cod liver oil has been traditionally used as a supplement for bone health, but there is also scientific rationale for its use in supporting or potentially treating osteoporosis. Cod liver oil is rich in vitamin D and vitamin A, both of which play important roles in bone metabolism. Vitamin D is essential for calcium absorption in the gut and maintaining adequate serum calcium and phosphate levels, which are necessary for normal bone mineralization. Several observational studies and clinical trials have shown that vitamin D supplementation can reduce bone loss and lower the risk of fractures, particularly in individuals who are deficient. Cod liver oil also contains omega-3 fatty acids, which may have anti-inflammatory effects and could potentially benefit bone health, though evidence in this area is less robust.
However, the direct evidence supporting cod liver oil specifically (as opposed to isolated vitamin D supplementation) for osteoporosis is limited. Most clinical trials focus on vitamin D and calcium, not cod liver oil as a whole product. Furthermore, excessive intake of vitamin A, also present in cod liver oil, has been associated with increased fracture risk in some studies.
